Help with the washing up

When you have a lot of people round for a meal, there can be a lot of washing up. So when you are serving lunch to 65+ people every weekday, hungry folks who have been busy on therapeutic activity projects at Crag House Farm, there really is a mountain of washing up!

This is the situation in the Centre at Caring For Life every weekday, and they serve breakfast as well. So a good industrial dishwasher is a must! This not only relieves the burden of work, but also ensures that crockery and cutlery are properly cleaned and sanitised.

Thanks to the generosity of grant makers, just before Christmas, a beautiful “all singing - all dancing” dishwasher was installed in our Centre kitchen.

The team on Catering Academy are getting to grips with how the new model works and we really are grateful for this amazing gift of help with the washing up!

Settling in Well

A new recruit to the Equestrian Project, Pabi, is settling in well. She is a four-legged recruit, a little pony, chosen for her size and temperament.  Easy to handle and groom, she is a very friendly pony and has quickly become a favourite for some of those attending the project. 

One lady said, “I really enjoy working with Pabi, because she’s my size, and she listens to me.”

One young man commented, “Pabi is fluffy and she’s kind.”

Pabi is clearly winning hearts already, as the other horses and ponies have done. The Equestrian Project is a wonderful opportunity for people, some of whom may be very socially isolated, to make friends, whether they be two-legged or four-legged friends!

At Home

It was wonderful to see so many people feeling really “at home” at Caring For Life over Christmas, whether it was in our supported homes or in the Centre at Crag House Farm on Christmas Day. It was a joy to be able to offer some people a home shortly before Christmas, and to see people safely rehoused.

On our conservation project at Crag House Farm there was something of a “housing crisis” at Christmas when the roof  blew off a well-used barn owl box. It was quickly repaired and  returned to its site. Another conservation  task undertaken at this time of the year is the cleaning out of nest boxes, in time for birds pairing up and nesting. It is really encouraging to be able to provide them with a safe home on site.

Our Being There housing support team work hard to seek to help people find a safe home and to settle in, so that they really do feel “at home”.

Finding suitable housing for people in crisis can be extremely difficult due to the shortage of suitable, affordable housing. Providing ongoing support is crucial, as helping someone to feel at home involves a great deal more than ensuring they have a roof over their head.
